On Sunday my niece Sarah and I took a trip down to New Orleans to get the quick orientation of the French Quarter. We took one of the carriage rides from here - Yes, I'll say the "T" word: TOURIST. Hey, it's more efficient than just walking around, and somebody tells you what you're looking at! By the way, this is Jackson Square, named for Andrew Jackson, who as a general in the War of 1812 defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans. At the far side of the square is the St. Louis Cathedral.

The riverboat Natchez. It's good to see that in New Orleans, the paddlewheels actually turn, unlike the ones in Savannah that have propellers and diesel exhaust pipes in the back - or "stern" is the correct term, I guess. There was a nice breeze on the waterfront, so we sat on a bench in the shade and looked through the AAA Tour Book to find a restaurant. (Don't make me say the "T-word" again!)

Just by luck we selected a very good restaurant, Petunias on St. Louis Street. There was a line of about 10 people standing in the hot sun waiting to get in. Several people said it was worth waiting for, so we stuck it out. It was incredible. I got this huge crepe, and every time I got a taste of crabmeat I decided I could take just one more bite. A little Louisiana Hot Sauce...Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm. (Sorry, I got a little carried away. This is Chartres Street in front of the cathedral. It's blocked off to traffic and instead artists sell pictures and fortune tellers will read bones for you.)

Yesterday I did laundry, updated the website and answered my cherished email from my dear friends. Today I came back by myself. Sarah began her new job on Monday - while her unemployed uncle who's living out of his car walks the streets of the French Quarter. Anyway, this is the French Market, which includes a Farmer's Market, thousands of bottles of hot sauce and bags of Cajun spices, and lots of tasteful souvenirs. (Sarcasm? You be the judge.)

SSDD. Same ship, different day. OK, I was short a picture, and I had a better one of the Natchez today. Plus I get to do the SSDD joke.

I also took a streetcar (as in ...Named Desire) to the Garden District. Once again, just like Charleston and Savannah, lots of gorgeous upscale mansions, with tourists (Doh! I said it again!!) walking around with their AAA Tour Books. I felt a little embarrassed taking pictures, but I did get this one. They just ignored me.
