My first
stop was the Wright brothers memorial in Kitty Hawk on the
Outer Banks of North Carolina. This is the centennial year, so
I couldn't resist.

The
reproductions of the shacks they lived in while they tested
their "flyer": turn-of-the-century state-of-the-art
cutting-edge research facility. Living quarters on the left,
hangar on the right.

This is (a
facsimile of) the rail the Wright brothers used to launch the
first flight. The large marker is where it left the ground and
the series of smaller markers is where the first four flights
landed. See the one in the distance? I can hear Wilbur now:
"Dude! What a rush!"

Next I drove
down to Nags Head and walked up to the top of Jockey's Ridge,
the highest sand dunes on the east coast. It quickly became
obvious that I need more exercise.

Jockey's
Ridge is famous for hang gliding. One lone student was up
there, and made his last flight of the day, but I missed the
picture. Arrgh!!

The rest of
the afternoon I drove toward Hatteras. I checked into a
beachside motel in Buxton - rustic fishing-shack decor with a
front porch complete with a rocking chair. As the sun set
(behind me, remember this is the Atlantic) I went for a walk
on the beach. Great day!!
